With two full seasons, two rushing titles, and the 1946 MVP on his Hall of Fame resume, Dudley would've made a better case for Mt. He returned in 1946 to again lead the league in rushing (as well as punt-returning and interceptions) but Dudley had trouble with the coach and demanded a trade after the season.

The Steelers lost, but the Post-Gazette called it "the day pro football came into its own in Pittsburgh." The 7-4 Steelers finished second, and made a profit, but Dudley went off to serve in World War II for the next two-and-a-half seasons. At one point, 37,764 fans packed Forbes Field for a game against the Redskins. Routinely compared to White, and mostly in a more favorable fashion, Dudley was the heartbeat of the first competitive Steelers team. He eventually became a Supreme Court justice and remained close to Rooney the rest of his life.īILL DUDLEY - The first overall draft pick in 1942 became the second and last Steeler to lead the league in rushing. After that season, White reverted to his previous plan of studying abroad via Rhodes Scholarship. But he did lead the NFL in rushing, one of only two Steelers to ever do so. "Sad case of a $15,000 player performing with a collection of 10-cent blockers," wrote a Buffalo columnist after one exhibition. The Pirates played three games in eight days and six games in two weeks and White was a marked man behind a line that was either bad or spiteful. White and teammates were forced to deny those rumors throughout the next half century, but one thing was certain: In trying to maximize White's value with exhibition games, Rooney overscheduled. The move upended the league's salary structure, upset the other owners, and possibly upset White's teammates, who were rumored to have taken off blocking assignments for the wealthy running back. WHIZZER WHITE - Art Rooney didn't buy the Steelers in 1933 after a windfall at the horse track, as is often incorrectly stated, but his monster handicapping run in 1938 allowed him to make White the highest-paid NFL player. He was booed lustily in the final games that season, and then died in a car crash the following summer. They were "unforgiving" after Kelsch missed two extra points in 1934 that cost the team two ties. He was lionized by fans after kicking the extra point that gave them their first win, 14-13, over the Chicago Cardinals, leading Kelsch to remark, "This National League must be a soft touch if they make a hero out of you for kicking." Wiser football words have never been spoken, but if only the fans had paid attention. The Post-Gazette dubbed Kelsch the "greatest sandlotter in local history," but by the time the Steelers (then the Pirates) joined the NFL, Kelsch was 36, the league's oldest player. That's when Art Rooney's sandlot team grabbed the attention of the NFL, when they played played Jim Thorpe's Canton Bulldogs to a 3-0 loss in 1925. MOSE KELSCH - The first big back in Pittsburgh football, Kelsch played fullback for the Hope Harveys in the 1920s.
